Open Door Clinic
Established as one of the first Free Clinics in North Carolina in 1985, the Open Door Clinic is a thriving non-profit medical facility operated through individual, county, United Way and foundation contributions to provide comprehensive medical care for uninsured adults. Our patients must document residence in Wake County and a household income at or less than 185% of Federal Poverty limits. Now a medical home to close to 6,000 active patients, the Open Door serves offers primary care with full pharmacy services to patients who have nowhere else to turn.
Services
- Care for both acute and chronic illness
- Prescription medications from on-site licensed pharmacy
- Disease prevention through a comprehensive immunization program, health education and dietary counseling
- Diagnostic services, such as labs at our on-site laboratory
- On-site specialty clinics for ophthalmology, podiatry, cardiology, nephrology, and gynecology
- Referrals for specialty follow-up for other needs
- Comprehensive diabetes management and risk reduction program
Support
- More than 500 active volunteers including physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, pharmacists & pharmacy assistants, health educators, dietitians, credentialed diabetes professionals. phlebotomists, interpreters and eligibility screeners join the staff to provide free care to patients
- Financial and in-kind support from local hospitals: WakeMed, Duke Raleigh and Rex
- Access to specialty care through Project Access, a program of the Wake County Medical Society
- Access to Prescription Assistance Programs of pharmaceutical companies, which provide more than $2.3 Million of free medications to ODC patients annually
- Funding from The Duke Endowment, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, The Stewards Fund, the North Carolina Free Clinic Association and Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina, The NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund, United Way of the Greater Triangle, Wake County Human Services, local businesses, congregations and individuals
- Wake County Department of Human Services for certain medications
- The North Carolina State Immunization Program
Mission
Recognizing health care as right and not a privilege, and recognizing that many members of our community go without vital health care services, the Mission of the Open Door Clinic is:
- To provide high-quality care services and education to adults in Wake County who lack adequate income, insurance coverage, or other means to obtain these services
- To provide services freely, without obligation on the part of those who receive them
- To respect the dignity and privacy of each person served
- To educate the community about the problem of lack of access to health care services
- To advocate for people without access to care at every opportunity
Hours of Operation:
Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm by appointment only
Medication refills: Mon 1-4 & 6-8; Tue 10-12 & 6-8; and Wed, Thu, 10-12, 1-4 & 6-8
Volunteer Opportunities
All licensed professionals are invited to participate in a dynamic clinic setting both days and evenings. Non-licensed eligibility screeners, receptionists and Spanish interpreters are needed for all clinic hours as well.
