“I have worked all of my adult life and have always been employed and insured, I was embarrassed to go for help, but I needed it. The intake gentleman at once made me feel comfortable and reassured me I have nothing to be ashamed of. The staff at open door clinic have always treated me with respect, and are very professional. The standard of care I received, I would put it up against any private practice.”- an Open Door Clinic Patient
Established as one of the first free clinics in North Carolina in 1985, the Open Door Clinic is a thriving non-profit medical facility operating through individual, Wake County, United Way and foundation contributions to provide comprehensive medical care for uninsured adults. Patients must provide proof of residence in Wake County and have a low income. Now a medical home to nearly 6,000 patients, the Open Door Clinic offers primary care with full pharmacy services to patients who have nowhere else to turn.
Goals
Recognizing health care as a right and not a privilege, and recognizing that many members of our community go without vital health care services, the purpose of the Open Door Clinic is:
- To provide high-quality care services and education to adults in Wake County, who lack adequate income, insurance coverage, or other means to obtain these services
- To respect the dignity and privacy of each person served
- To educate the community about the problem of lack of access to health care services
