VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEW JOBLINK CENTER AND CLINIC SCHEDULING!
Volunteer assisting job seekers at new center

Urban Ministries became one of the newest JobLink Satellite Offices with the help of the North Carolina Workforce Development Board on June 25th! The service will be available Monday through Thursday from 10am until 1pm.

WRAL news was on hand that day to report. You can watch the video here or read the story here.

The center allows clients to build a successful resume, register for work in NC, and apply for jobs. We need volunteers to assist clients in writing their resume using a full featured resume writing program.

Prior experience writing resumes is not necessary, as the program does almost all of the work! In addition, volunteers who can help clients navigate the NC Employment Securities Commission web page to find jobs and register for work. The web page is simple and neatly laid out, and all that would be required is the most basic internet skills.

We are also seeking volunteers with good computer skills to answer incoming eligibility calls, pre-screen potential Open Door Clinic patients, and schedule appointments. This is an important role in expediting care for your poor and uninsured neighbors in Wake County.

If you can help, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Molly Sheffield at msheffield@urbanmin.org.

COURSE AT HELEN WRIGHT CENTER PREPARES RESIDENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL APARTMENT LIVING
House for Rent

Wake County Human Services’ Supportive Housing team is coming to the Helen Wright Center for Women to teach a class called Ready to Rent starting August 5.

The classes move people toward self-sufficiency by teaching them the skills necessary to transition into independent living. Information such as landlord negotiation, reasonable living spaces, credit checks, etc. are provided to students.

Upon graduation, students receive a certification of completion recognized by landlords in the area who have a relationship with the WCHS Supportive Housing team. The classes are open to the public and are held for four consecutive Wednesdays from 1-3pm at the Helen Wright Center in downtown Raleigh.

More information about the August classes and for contact and/or registration information, view the flyer here.

The ladies living at our Helen Wright Center, and those transitioning to their own apartments, can always use donated items like toiletries, flip-flops and bed linens. Click here to view the list of current needs.

Many national and local agencies are experiencing a sharp increase in the number of clients seeking assistance. At the same time, budgets must be streamlined in the face of decreased funding.

The Triangle Business Journal and the Philanthropy Journal both recently published stories detailing the increasing demand for services at Urban Ministries due to the recession. The articles include an interview with our own Anne Burke.

“I choose to rise up out of that storm and see that in moments of desperation, fear, and helplessness, each of us can be a rainbow of hope, doing what we can to extend ourselves in kindness and grace to one another.

And I know for sure that there is no them...there's only us.”
