Open Door Clinic History and Goals

Open Door Clinic History and GoalsHistory

Established as one of the first free clinics in North Carolina in 1985, the Open Door Clinic provides comprehensive primary care and all medications in a medical home model to more than 5,000 patients. The clinic coordinates access to specialists, lab and radiology services, and provides expedited enrollment for referrals from hospital safety net partners.

Recognizing health care as a right and not a privilege, and recognizing that many members of our community go without vital health care services, the purpose of the Open Door Clinic is:

  • To provide high-quality health care and education to adults in Wake County, who lack adequate income, insurance coverage, and other means to obtain these services
  • To respect the dignity and privacy of each person served
  • To educate the community about the problem of lack of access to health care services
  • To advocate for people without access to care
  • To provide constructive volunteering opportunities to professionals, groups and individuals in our community
83% of our patients feel their health improved in the last year
48% of our patients have stayed out of the hospital for the last two years
39% of our patients report fewer visits to the hospital than last year
